Celebrity Chef Opens School For Children With Asperger’s And Autism

Another successful Synergy project has come to fruition with the official opening of LVS Hassocks School, in West Sussex.

Students and staff at LVS Hassocks were joined by celebrity chef Paul Rankin on Friday 27th May, to celebrate the official opening of the school in Sayers Common. Top chef Paul, a regular on BBC’s Ready Steady Cook, worked with the students in the school’s new teaching kitchen preparing healthy pizzas for visitors to sample.

Paul then compared a cook off between two students, the Head Teacher and Assistant Head Teacher. The teams were challenged to cook a chicken stir-fry – from scratch, in front of an audience of over 100 invited guests. Cheered on by their fellow students and staff, the Head Teacher, Sarah Sherwood and Charlie Ries-Coward won the tastiest dish category, and Assistant Head Teacher, Jackie Doe and Liam Pope won the best presented dish.

LVS Hassocks is a day and residential school providing a supported learning environment for children aged 8-19 years who have communication, socialisation and imagination difficulties, specifically with autism or Asperger’s.

Guests including parents, industry professionals, representatives from Local Education Authorities and the local community enjoyed a tour of the school, with demonstrations by students working in the Horticulture, Art and Business Enterprise areas. The opening celebrated the success and achievements’ of the students to date and showcased the school now that the major refurbishments to the former Priory are complete.
Synergy provided quantity surveying, building surveying and CDM Coordination on this exciting project.
