HSE Demand Safer Sites
In 2009/2010, over 40 construction workers died, 3,120 suffered major injuries and 2.6 million working days were lost through work related illness.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have released a Construction Division’s Plan of Work for 2011/2012 which emphasises the regulation of smaller sites and businesses.
Although parts of the construction industry have made significant improvements in recent years, the sector remains one of the most hazardous.
HSE plan to tackle operational activities such as asbestos, small sites, refurbishments and major clients and projects. Other issues being considered, include working at height, asbestos risks, the provision of welfare facilities and respiratory risks.
While continuing to investigate accidents and complaints, the HSE predict fewer site visits will be required as they focus on helping small businesses with health and safety law and challenging large contractors at board level.
The activities of the HSE will include web-based site training, Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses and an evaluation of the Construction Design Management (CDM) Regulations 2007. To find out more, visit http://www.hse.gov.uk/construction/index.htm
The HSE are looking to the construction industry to play their part in bringing about change and improvements.
